About Stone

stone sculpture rock

The types of stone used at Stone Sculpture Studio have been carefully selected from all over Australia.  Marble is the main stone of choice. Mount Gambier Limestone and sandstone are also used for our sculptures. Other stones from around the world are used to a limited degree such as Cararra Marble etc.

Chillagoe Marble:

Chillagoe marble

Is found in Chillagoe, which is west of Cairns, Queensland. Colours range from white, yellow, black and multicolour. It's small crystals make it ideal for finer work. Polishes to a high shine.

Angaston Marble:

Angaston marble

Is found in Angaston in South Australia. Colours range from a multitude of different greys, blacks and white all in one stone, to pink and black. Due to it's larger crystals, Angaston Marble is more suited to abstract sculpture. Polishes to a high shine.

Mount Gambier Limestone:

Mount Gambier Limestone

Is found at Mount Gambier, South Australia. Well suited to large outdoor sculptures. Doesn't polish. A relatively cheap stone to purchase, this is also a great stone to begin learning sculpture with.

Sandstone:

Sandstone

The most common stone around Bendigo. Very easy to obtain, but doesn't take a high polish.

Carrara Marble:

Carrara marble

Yes, this one's not from Australia. Found in Carrara, Italy. One of the most sort after marbles. However, due to freight costs to Australia, this is one of the most expensive stones to obtain.
